Clinton to Lone Butte to Kamloops to Clinton BC Loop - 250 miles
We had to adjust our plans a bit give the huge wildfire in and around Jasper National Park, which has closed roads in/out of Jasper and the surrounding area and done some devastating damage.
So we spent 2 nights in Clinton and had an easier day today, sleeping in, enjoying a leisurely breakfast, and taking off around 11am for a loop ride around the Clinton, British Columbia area.
But before we left, we got a photo of our new Moto Club t-shirts in the lobby of our hotel:
Our route took us past MANY lakes - a theme in BC. There is a lot of water here; seems like we pass 10-15 lakes or rivers on every ride. The scenery is spectacular and photos do not do it justice.
Below are a few shots of Lac De Roches. Seen from Hwy 24 and nestled within the heart of the BC wilderness, in the “Land of Hidden Waters,” lies Lac Des Roches, known for its trophy Gerrard Rainbows and freshwater cod (burbots) that are prevalent in the winter for excellent ice fishing. Lac Des Roches is also a top BC fly fishing lake, with massive mayfly and caddice ( Sedge ) hatchings.
There are more than 100 lakes within easy driving distance of Lac Des Roches !
Hwy 24 is just gorgeous - see the YouTube videos below for more !
We headed south on Hwy 5, barreling toward Kamloops, where we visited the local Harley Davidson shop (Barnes) to pick up oil (which our bikes are a bit notorious for burning), and did some retail shopping.
A fantastic shop that greeted us with Lattes, a fun showroom, and a ton of retail. Kate picked up a pair of rain gaiters to put over her boots (her rain pants are not long enough and her boots got twice as soaked as mine did), so we are hoping that is a signal to the weather gods that they need to leave us alone.
Before we even went into the shop, we noticed the shop mascot enjoying some fresh air out on his own private deck !
After leaving the shop, we took the Tans-Canada Continental Highwy (1) to 97 back to Clinton. Along the way we had to constantly do Speed Limit math to translate kilometers per hour to miles per hour. I mostly failed and was probably going way to fast but we never got caught.
In general, the Canadian drivers get a B+ for their courtesy on the road and their excellent driving skills.
We have found the Canadian people to be just wonderful ! They are very kind, very personable, and so incredibly welcoming !
We went to a restaurant in town called Gold Mountain Restaurant. The Chinese food was amazing ! The Molson beer was thirst quenching !
I have titled this pic "Tired Americans Doing a Terrible Job of Pouring their Beer into Their Glasses":
Kate moved to California from New Jersey in a VW Van, so here she is:
Now for some Videos...
We got stuck waiting on some one lane traffic controls for chip sealing:

Here is our route for the day - tomorrow we cross into Alberta and stay close to Lake Louise !
San Francisco to Eureka, CA - 309 Miles The day started kind of chilly and drizzly as we headed north over the Golden Gate Bridge. Welcome to summer in the City - Karl the Fog is ever present. After a quick gas stop in Mill Valley, we rode as fast as we could up 101 north to make it to Cloverdale, where we hopped on 128 West toward the coast. This 60 mile stretch of spectacular twisties cuts through Alexander Valley, a wine region that produces some fantastic small batch wines, and redwoods that are hundreds of years old. Kate and I soaking in the super fresh air in the redwood forrest: 128 terminates on Highway 1 in Albion & Mendocino; the coastal cliffs are just gorgeous and the wildflowers are bursting with color. Here are some shots from the cliffs close to Mendocino.... Alice (poser): Kate (Serious Biker Chick): Coastal Beauty: ....and 2 other kinds of "coastal beauties" lol Highway 1 stops hugging the coast a little north of Rockport, where it turns northeast toward...
Boise ID to Alturas CA - 394 Miles After a crazy long day yesterday, we were looking forward to shorter day, and gaining back an hour as we entered the Pacific Time Zone. Here is the morning view from our hotel in downtown Boise (the Grove): After a quick 50 miles on the freeway north, we broke off to Highway 20 west, which starts out VERY DULL. Of course, we had to stop for several one lane traffic controls (the amount of road construction in Idaho, Oregon, and California is insane). Here are a few shots from a stop on Hwy 20: We didn't stop to get a lot of pics on Hwy 20, but the video footage is AMAZING. Unfortunately, the wireless was not reliable or fast enough for me to upload the videos, so I will try again tomorrow. From Hwy 20, we got onto 395 south in Oregon. The first 100 miles were pure monotony. One straight line of 80 mph in 80 degree dry heat. Ew. It got a little interesting when we hugged Lake Abert: After another hour on 395, we finally crossed back into Californi...
Nevada City CA to Mariposa CA - 200 miles Second to last day on the road - a light day tooling down Hwy 49 following the gold rush trail thru Northern California. While washing our bikes the night before, we met a great grandmother with was with her extended family that has been doing family reunions in Nevada City for years. She was our biggest fans for riding, and loved our bikes. After a few conversations, she asked "I hope you are ok with me asking, but are you two doctors or nurses ?" As a tech dork, this was a big compliment for me. Kate also worked in technology (at UCSF). We did find that the 3 of us all had something in common - health care. Great Grandma is a retired therapist (...but I cannot remember which kind - speech perhaps). One of the wonderful parts of these rides is the amazing people we meet from all parts of the world. We started the day with a wonderful breakfast at Three Forks (both dinner last night and breakfast were just amazing), and then hopped ...
Love the shirt!!
